Our Memberships

The concept of Habitat for Humanity was founded in 1976 in Americus, Georgia by a man named Millard Fuller. The idea developed from the concept of ‘partnership housing’ where those in need of adequate shelter worked side by side with volunteers from all walks of life to build simple, decent housing.

In 1984 Habitat's most famous volunteer, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, along with his wife, Rosalyn, participated in their first Habitat build project. Their personal involvement in Habitat brought the organization increased visibility and sparked interest in Habitat's work throughout North America and around the world.

In 1985 the movement spread to Canada with the formation of the first Canadian affiliate in Winkler, Manitoba. From these simple beginnings the Habitat for Humanity movement in Canada has grown to 72 affiliates in 10 provinces and two territories and has been successful in placing more than 1,400 families into new homes.

Habitat for Humanity now spans over 90 countries and is responsible for placing over 225,000 families into new homes around the world.

Habitat for Humanity Red Deer Region is a non-profit organization, founded in 1994 that has been successful in building homes for families in and around the community. Habitat Red Deer Region purchases lots that will allow us to build more efficiently and put more families into homes, making their dream of home ownership a reality. We are dedicated t promoting home ownership as a means to breaking the cycle of poverty. We build homes in the Central Alberta community and offer them to select low-income working families through a no-down payment, interest free mortgage program. Habitat for Humanity Red Deer Region has built 29 homes and continues to increase this number annually.

The ReStore is our retail division dedicated to recycling new and gently used building materials. Habitat Canada has 68 stores across the country. These ReStores keep over 22,700 tons of usable goods out of landfills, every year. Every item is donated and the profits go towards Habitat for Humanity Red Deer Region's home building program and restoring hope to low-income working families. Our inventory is always changing as donations come in, but you can generally expect to find; windows, lumber, doors, paint, hardware, tools, light fixtures, furniture and appliances.
